Most businesses don’t have a “system” problem. They have a follow-through problem.
The same issues keep coming back because nobody sits down, looks at the evidence, makes decisions and assigns actions.
That’s what management review is for. Not a corporate meeting. Not a box-tick. A short, structured check-in that keeps your business audit-ready and stops repeat problems.
What is a management review, in plain English?
It’s a scheduled meeting where leadership reviews how the business is performing and decides what to improve. Auditors want to see that:
- you review performance and compliance
- you make decisions based on evidence
- you assign actions and follow them through
Why it matters, even if you’re busy
A good management review helps you:
- stop repeat nonconformities
- reduce complaints and rework
- tighten up delivery
- prove control to clients and auditors
- keep objectives and risks up to date
The simple agenda that works
You don’t need a three-hour meeting. For most SMEs, 45 to 60 minutes quarterly is enough.
1. Actions from the last review
- what was agreed
- what’s done
- what’s overdue, and why
2. Customer feedback and complaints
- complaints — what happened, and any trends
- compliments and testimonials
- repeat issues
3. Audit results
- internal audits completed
- key findings
- recurring findings
4. Nonconformities and corrective actions
- what was raised
- root causes
- effectiveness checks — did it stay fixed?
5. Performance and KPIs
Pick a handful that matter, such as on-time delivery, rework and returns, incidents and near misses, training completion, and supplier performance.
6. Risks and opportunities
- what’s changed since last time
- new contracts, sites or suppliers
- new legal or client requirements
7. Resources
- staffing capacity
- competence and training needs
- tools and equipment
8. Objectives
- are targets being met?
- what needs changing?
- what’s the next priority?
9. Decisions and actions — the most important part
For each action, record what will be done, who owns it, the due date, and what “done” looks like.
What evidence should you keep?
- meeting minutes, one to two pages
- an action log
- any supporting reports — KPIs, audit summary, complaints summary
Common mistakes that get flagged
- no actions recorded
- actions recorded but never closed
- no evidence reviewed — all opinion
- the same issues appearing at every review with no change
The CAW Consultancy way
We keep management review practical: a plain-English agenda, decisions and actions that actually get done, and evidence stored so you can find it in seconds. It’s one of the first things we build into an ISO management system, and it’s usually the single biggest reason clients stop seeing the same findings year after year.
Need help with this?
CAW Consultancy has helped UK businesses achieve ISO certification and industry accreditation for over 20 years, with a 100% pass rate. See what we do, or send us an enquiry — we’ll tell you what you need, what you don’t, and what it will cost. Ask and we’ll send over the management review template we use with clients.
Getting certified, or keeping it running
CAW Consultancy builds your management system, prepares you for audit and supports you through certification across 20+ ISO standards, from £999 ex VAT for a single standard.
Prefer to run it in-house? The ISO Training Institute has self-paced courses with a month of phone and email support afterwards, plus free starter courses. And if you want the whole system paperless, CAW Digital builds it into a digital platform for £999 flat.
