ISO standards explained: 22 short videos in plain English

ISO standards can look dense on paper, so we’ve made a short video for each of the standards we work with. Each one explains what the standard is for, who it suits and what you need in place, in plain English and without the jargon.

The videos are presented by Craig Willetts, a UK lead auditor with over 20 years’ experience. They work well as a starting point if you’re thinking about certification, and as awareness training for your team once your system is in place.

Guidance standards

These standards give recommendations rather than requirements, so there’s no certificate for them on their own. Most organisations use them to strengthen a system they already have.

ISO 45003:2021 Psychological health and safety at work

Guidance on managing psychosocial risks such as workload, lone working and work-related stress. It is a guidance standard and is not certified on its own.

ISO/IEC 27032:2023 Internet security

Guidance on internet security that works alongside ISO 27001. It is not certified on its own.

ISO 31000:2018 Risk management

Guidance on managing risk across an organisation. It is a guidance standard and is not certified on its own.

ISO 19011:2026 Auditing management systems

The guidelines for planning and carrying out management system audits. It is a guidance standard and is not certified on its own.

Accreditation standards

Certification bodies, personnel certification bodies and laboratories are accredited to these standards, in the UK by UKAS, rather than certified.

ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 Certification bodies

The requirements for bodies that audit and certify management systems. Bodies are accredited to it, not certified.

ISO/IEC 17024:2026 Certification of persons

The requirements for bodies that certify people. Bodies are accredited to it, not certified.

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Testing and calibration laboratories

The requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Labs are accredited to it, not certified.
